World Environment Day (June 5, 2015) [fr]
As we celebrate the 43rd World Environment Day, France reaffirms that 2015 will be a critical year for the environment.
Indeed, the international community has been tasked with defining a new model of sustainable development this year:
new sustainable development objectives will be adopted in September. They must be universal and be focused on humans and their relationship with the environment;
the fight against desertification will be a key issue at the Conference of the Parties to the Rio Convention to be held in September in Turkey. Halting land degradation is a key aspect of the fight against climate disruption;
COP21 in Paris in December should finally make it possible to reach a universal and legally binding agreement and to mobilize all actors in our societies in support of the fight against climate disruption.
Under the leadership of Laurent Fabius, COP21 President, France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is mobilized to that end. Laurent Fabius is in Marseille today to attend the MEDCOP21 meeting which will bring together local stakeholders from both sides of the Mediterranean committed to the fight against climate disruption. He will visit UNESCO on June 8 to open, together with Irina Bokova, World Oceans Day.
