Visit to Pakistan of a delegation of France-Pakistan Friendship Group at the French National Assembly
The delegation was headed by its President, Mr. Claude Birraux, Member National Assembly from Haute-Savoie, and comprised Mrs. Geneviève Gaillard, Vice President (Member National Assembly from Deux-Sèvres), Mr. Jean-Luc Reitzer, Vice President (Member National Assembly from Haut-Rhin), Mr. Jacques Desallangre, Member National Assembly from Aisne, and Mrs. Brigitte Brot, Administrator of the National Assembly. The delegation carried out an official visit, at the invitation of Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan, from 13th to 19th May 2006.
In Islamabad, the members of the delegation were received by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Chairman of the Senate, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination and also the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.
The delegation also met with the Chairman of the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA), the Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), and the Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI). A reception offered by the Ambassador at the Residence of France gave the delegation the opportunity to meet the French community living in Islamabad.
The delegation went to Peshawar, provincial capital the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), where it called on the Governor. The local authorities also organised a visit to Khyber Pass, near to the border with Afghanistan.
On May 17th , the parliamentarians went to Muzaffarabad, capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), where they were received by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. They also met with the representatives of many French NGOs, working in this area badly affected by the earthquake of October 2005 (Architectes de l’urgence, ACTED, le Secours populaire, Première urgence et Atlas logistique).
The visit ended in Lahore, capital of the province of Punjab. The delegation met with the Governor, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Speaker of the provincial assembly. A meeting was also arranged with the French business community in Lahore.
