Visit to Pakistan of a delegation of the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces of the French Senate
The delegation was lead by Mr Jean François-Poncet, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committe, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, who visited Pakistan along with Senators André Trillard and André Vantomme, and Mrs Dominique-Alice Robert, administration officer. Senator François-Poncet stayed in Pakistan until the 9th of april, which allowed him to visit the port of Gwadar on the Arabian sea and the city of Peshawar, capital of the North-West Frontier Province.
The delegation met with the following high-level political authorities : Mr Kasuri, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Tariq Aziz, Chairman of the National Security Council, Mr Soomro, Chairman of the Senate, Senator Mushahid Hussain, Chairman of the Senate’s Commission for Foreign Affairs and Secretary General of the PML-Q, Mr Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, and the Minister of Justice of Punjab.
The French Senators also called on several high-ranking military officials, including General Ehsan-ul- Haq, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, as well as members of the Pakistani civil society (academics and journalists).
The delegation from the French Senate visited the Honorary Consuls of France in Lahore and Peshawar and met with the French community during a reception offered by Régis de Belenet, Ambassador of France to Pakistan, at the Residence of France. Finally the Senators attended the ceremony held for the closing of the French Army handled “Fuel Farm” in Abottabad which was set up in the context of the French emergency response to the earthquake, at first within the NATO apparatus, and on a bilateral basis for the last two months.
