The Ambassador of France to Pakistan, Mr. Régis de Belenet, confers the medal of the «Ordre National du Mérite» upon Commodore Ali Syed Mahmood (with the grade of Chevalier) and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Rafi (with the grade of Officier)

The “Ordre National du Mérite” with the grade of Chevalier has been awarded by the President of the French Republic to Ali Syed Mahmood, Director General Submarine Project of the Pakistan Navy, and with the grade of Officier to Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Rafi, Senior Vice President Pakistan Engineering Complex, and was bestowed on them by Mr. Régis de Belenet, Ambassador of France au Pakistan, during a reception organised at the Residence of France in Islamabad, on November 28, 2006.

This distinction created by General de Gaulle in 1962, marks the acknowledgement of the French authorities towards French and foreign personalities for their remarkable commitment and career. The awards were given to the two officers of Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Air Force in recognition of their efforts and contribution in promoting relations between France and Pakistan in defence cooperation. Commodore Ali was conferred this distinction for cooperating in the project of Submarine Agosta 90-B (DCN-Pakistani Navy partnership) while Air Vice Marshal Rafi was honoured for cooperating with France for Mirage aircrafts Programme.
