Launch of the new program “French Science Tour in Pakistan” with Dr Kaveri, immunologist from INSERM
(December 08, 2008)
In order to increase the scientific and technical cooperation between France and Pakistan, the French Embassy in Islamabad has set up a new program: “the French Science Tour in Pakistan (FSTP)”. In the framework of this program, several eminent scientists belonging to the best research centers in France are invited in Pakistan to deliver lectures in selected universities and research institutes. FSTP gives them the opportunity to interact with Pakistani students, faculty members, junior and senior scientists. In some cases, joint research projects will be initiated and the French Embassy will lend them support providing a 6 months fellowship for a young Pakistani scientist to join the French laboratory.
The first scientist to inaugurate the FSTP was Dr. S V Kaveri, immunologist and Director of Research at INSERM (the French national institute for health and medical research). Dr. Kaveri’s laboratory has been involved with the basic and applied aspects of research in the area of immunopathology and immunotherapy. He has put forward various new concepts towards understanding the basis for diseases of the human immune system and his current interests are aimed at improving the therapeutic strategies for treating these diseases. He has published more than 150 papers (research articles, review papers and book chapters) and has several patents to his credit. He is part of a panel of experts member of both American and European agencies of medicines. In his laboratory in Paris, Dr. Kaveri has trained several young medical and non-medical scientists from various countries.
During his stay in Pakistan, from 1st to 5th December 2008, Dr. Kaveri visited and delivered lectures in University of Karachi, Aga Khan University, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), National Institute of Health (NIH), NUST Center for Virology and Immunology (NCVI) and Qaid-E-Azam University. Thus, more than 500 scientists were able to interact with him and one of them will soon join his lab for a 6 month cooperation project.
FSTP program will carry on, mid-December, with Dr Tasadduq Khan, French-Pakistani born researcher in materials for aeronautic and aerospace from ONERA (the French national aerospace laboratory).
