France condemns attacks on Pakistani media

(FEBRUARY 19, 2009)

France condemns in the strongest possible
terms the heinous murder of Geo TV’s correspondent in Swat, Musa Khan, in the
Matta tehsil on February 18. France expresses its sincere condolences to his
family, his friends and to his colleagues.

The bombing of the Wana Press Club on the same
day, in the South Waziristan Agency, is another example of the threats the media
community is facing in Pakistan. The work of journalists in those no-go areas is
essential for the rest of the population to be kept informed of what is
happening there.

France urges both media outlets and the
Pakistani Authorities to keep pursuing the aim of ensuring safety of
journalists, wherever they work in Pakistan.

Those unacceptable attacks on the media
constitute a serious threat to the freedom of the media in Pakistan, a principle
that is both recognized by the Pakistani constitution and several international
conventions.

France pays tribute to the outstanding work of
Pakistani media, whose staff is often working in life threatening conditions and
assures them of its full support./.
