Environment - Climate – World Biodiversity Day (May 22, 2015) [fr]

The International Day for Biological Diversity is designed to remind us that conservation, sustainable management, and the restoration of biodiversity can play an important role in the fight against climate disruption.

In partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, France is working to curb greenhouse gases, facilitate adaptation to the effects of climate change, and halt biodiversity loss. The restoration of mangrove forests, the sustainable management of natural areas, protected marine areas and forest regions, and the establishment of payment systems for services rendered by ecosystems, are all concrete actions in this regard. We will also soon ratify the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization.

In its cooperation with its partners from the South, France is also promoting initiatives to provide funding for biodiversity and is working hard to ensure that this aspect be included in the post-2015 development agenda.

We hope the UN General Assembly decides to start negotiations on an agreement to implement the Montego Bay convention to protect biodiversity on the high seas.
