Celebrations of the International Week of French Speaking World

H.E. Mr. Philippe Thiébaud, Ambassador of France to Pakistan, hosted a reception on the occasion of the conclusion of the International Week of French Speaking World (La Semaine Internationale de la Francophonie) on March 22, 2012 at the premises of the French Embassy in Islamabad in cooperation with French speaking countries. A large number of representatives of educational institutions (where French language is taught), teachers of French at the Alliance Française of Islamabad, at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) attended this reception along with the winners of different competitions held on the occasion of International “Francophonie” Week.

The International Organisation of La Francophonie (www.francophonie.org) represents one of the biggest linguistic zones in the world. Its members share more than just a common language. They also share the humanist values promoted by the French language. The French language and its humanist values represent the two cornerstones on which the International Organisation of La Francophonie is based.

The International Organisation of La Francophonie was created in 1970. Its mission is to embody the active solidarity between its 75 member states and governments (56 members and 19 observers), which together represent over one-third of the United Nations’ member states and account for a population of over 890 million people, including 220 million French speakers.

In Pakistan, different events were organized during March 2012 in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore on the occasion of the International Week of French Speaking World. These events was also an opportunity for the 19 Countries representing Francophonie in Pakistan (Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Greece, Hungary, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritius, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Switzerland, Thailand, and Tunisia) to be part of the French language promotion.

The Alliance française of Islamabad and the National University of Modern Language (NUML) organized the following events:

On the 19th of March, after the opening ceremony by H.E. Mr. Philippe Thiébaud, Ambassador of France to Pakistan, a spelling and French Poems competition took place.

On the 20th of March, there a speech/debate contest and screening of documentary took place.

On the 21st of March, following games, theatre play, a French Song competition and cultural show, a Prize Distribution Ceremony concluded the week.

In Karachi, at the Alliance Française of Karachi organized:

On the 22nd of March, two French films, « Paris je t’aime » and « Un lac », were screened in the patio of the Alliance.

On the 24th of March, a full afternoon will be dedicated to Francophile activities with a student festival and three theatre plays.

In Lahore, the French Alliance of Lahore presented:

On the 22nd of March, a competition of French poems was held between 10 leading Pakistani Universities.
